Interactive messages and inbox experiences

Prev Next

Interactive messages turn supported email content into a personalized micro-experience in the inbox. Recipients can rate, answer, explore, or act without first opening a separate website or landing page.

Why interactive messages matter

Removing an intermediate click can make feedback and simple actions easier for the recipient. Combined with Elaine’s real-time hyperpersonalization, the interactive experience can use multiple governed data sources to adapt content, questions, products, offers, and next steps for each recipient—even in campaigns sent to millions.

Example experiences

  • One-click ratings, star ratings, NPS, surveys, and quizzes.
  •
  • Product exploration, image interactions, or personalized selections.
  •
  • Countdown timers and other time-sensitive content.
  •
  • Video or rich media where the receiving email client supports it.
  •
  • Custom interactive components designed for a specific campaign or service process.

Solution pattern

  1. Select an enabled standard widget or define a reviewed custom component.
  2.
  3. Connect profile, transaction, event, product, or recommendation data needed for the recipient-level experience.
  4.
  5. Configure branding, language, content, response behavior, and an accessible static fallback.
  6.
  7. Insert the component into an approved Elaine message or reusable article.
  8.
  9. Process responses through supported link actions, forms, business rules, data fields, or automation events.
  10.
  11. Validate the response before updating persistent data or triggering consequential actions.
  12.
  13. Test the delivered result across representative email clients, devices, privacy modes, and data combinations.

Hyperpersonalization and response loop

The initial component can be selected and populated from multiple data sources in real time. A permitted response can then update an Elaine workflow, advance an automation, enrich a profile, notify another application, or influence the next interaction. This closes the loop from individual context to interaction and subsequent action.

Email-client compatibility

Interactive HTML and CSS support differs significantly between email clients. Every interactive element therefore needs a useful fallback—such as a static representation and a link to a web experience. Do not infer lack of interest solely because an email client prevented the interactive version from loading.

Privacy, security, and data quality

  • Apply consent, PAC, purpose, and permission controls to data used for personalization and response processing.
  •
  • Treat values returned from an email client as untrusted input and validate authorization, format, range, and consistency.
  •
  • Do not expose secrets or unnecessary personal data in markup, URLs, or client-side state.
  •
  • Use opaque identifiers, expiry, and replay protection for sensitive actions.
  •
  • Explain what an interaction does before it updates preferences or triggers a consequential process.

Availability note: Available widgets, editor controls, response processing, and custom-component options depend on the enabled Elaine features, release, configuration, and implementation scope.
