Contact groups and segmentation

Prev Next

Learn how contact groups, filters, and segmentation support targeted communication.

Key concepts

  • Contact groups store memberships and provide communication, field, permission, or organizational context.
  •
  • Filters evaluate reusable conditions over profile, group, activity, or campaign data.
  •
  • Audiences or target groups combine conditions to select eligible contacts for a message or campaign.
  •
  • Exclusions and suppression rules protect against conflicting, ineligible, or over-contacted selections.

How it works

  1. Define the business meaning and ownership of each group.
  2.
  3. Create reusable filters with clear names and testable conditions.
  4.
  5. Combine filters into an audience and inspect representative included and excluded profiles.
  6.
  7. Evaluate the audience near execution time when current data matters.
  8.
  9. Monitor audience size changes and investigate unexpected movement.

Governance and considerations

  • A segment is not a substitute for consent, subscription, blacklist, or PAC checks.
  •
  • Time-relative filters can produce different results on every evaluation.
  •
  • Avoid duplicating equivalent filters across campaigns; reuse governed rules.
